The obvious argument against cross-platform from a business perspective is that the manufacturer's biggest currency in their console wars is exclusivity.

ROCKET LEAGUE MULTIPLAYER CONSOLS WINDOWS 10
In the March announcement by Microsoft, they said that "This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks-including other consoles and PC networks." When Sony were directly asked if they would be interested, they gave the very safe and business answer that they’ve been support connectivity between PC and and PlayStation since 2002 with Final Fantasy 11, and that they “would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play.” Sony said this in direct response to being asked if they were interested in working with Microsoft, and while it’s clearly not a no, it’s interesting that Sony elected to not even directly mention Microsoft or Xbox Live. It’s not like the idea is being completely ignored by the 2 console juggernauts. This means that now PS4 and PC users can play together, XbOne and PC users can play together but still there is no way for the consoles to play online with each other. I've asked Valve if it's got any comment on the topic.Rocket League was patched this week to enable cross-platform play between PC and Xbox One users, following up on the promise made by Microsoft in March that they were enabling cross-platform play. It'll still take its cut from transactions in the Steam version, which is played by many thousands of owners every day, but it must have some feelings about the store page becoming inert to potential new Steam players. One question is how Valve feels about the whole thing. (Do try it when it's free, though, unless you're allergic to the Epic Store.) If you want to own Rocket League on Steam, time is officially running out, although I can't imagine anyone who hasn't bought it already cares enough to spend the $20.
ROCKET LEAGUE MULTIPLAYER CONSOLS UPDATE
Psyonix hasn't said exactly when the free-to-play update will happen, except that it'll be sometime this summer. Louis Blues sucked for half an NHL season and then won the Stanley Cup. (Anecdotally, sometimes I just suck for a night or two and de-rank, and then get back into the groove and beat up on some unlucky players as I return to my previous level, and I wonder if that's sometimes what people are talking about when they theorize that there are hordes of smurfs out there. Unlike some shooters, Rocket League isn't plagued by cheaters, although it's possible we'll see more smurf accounts when it's free to make one.

I'll continue playing on Steam, and I won't see Epic Store newcomers at my rank, at least not until they learn how to air dribble better than I ever will and in a quarter of the time, the bastards.

I've put over 1,000 hours into Rocket League on Steam, and I don't expect much to change for me when the free-to-play update hits. The Faded Cosmos boost (for players who played online before today) (Image credit: Psyonix)
